It’s a strange time in Epcot’s history. Rumors are swirling about major changes in the next five years, but nothing is certain. Guardians of the Galaxy is the most common one, but we’ve also heard about Tron, Ratatouille, and other possibilities. With Pandora open at the Animal Kingdom and the Star Wars Experience on the way at the Studios, the outlier is Epcot. I suspect we’ll learn more next month at the D23 Expo, but nothing is certain. It’s the perfect time to bring in a guest that studied Epcot for his new book. Aaron Wallace recently completed The Thinking Fan’s Guide to Walt Disney World: Epcot and takes a smart approach to the parks and their attractions.
Wallace is the guest on this episode of The Tomorrow Society Podcast, and our conversation explores both the past and possible future of Epcot. He’s also the host of the long-running Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Pod podcast and knows a lot about the Walt Disney World resort. The book provides a nuanced take that criticizes attractions that need some work but recognizes their value. Disney fans often fall into two camps when it comes to Epcot, so it isn’t easy to bridge that divide. People like me that visited the old EPCOT Center during its heyday expect more than just a well-made attraction with Disney characters. The theme of the opening-day park remains important.
Our discussion covers Wallace’s background as a Disney fan and then goes fully into Epcot. Whether you loved the original EPCOT Center or have just visited more recently, there should be a lot to enjoy within this episode. Despite my frustrations at the slow pace of change in the park, I’m excited to find out what’s next for Epcot.
