Walt Disney’s reputation comes from Disneyland, Mickey Mouse, and animated features, but his story includes much more. There’s a reason it is so challenging for biographers to chronicle his life. Looking beyond the obvious, Walt’s life offers more for historians. A prime example is the True-Life Adventures, which were revolutionary in the ‘40s and ‘50s. In his new book, Christian Moran does a great job capturing the importance of that series. True-Life Adventures: A History of Walt Disney’s Nature Documentaries is worth a read even if you aren’t familiar with the films.
Moran is my guest on the latest episode of The Tomorrow Society Podcast to discuss the book and other projects. We talk about Walt’s environmentalism and the legacy of the True-Life Adventure films. Moran also explains his writing process and extensive research. The other main topic is Enchanted Tiki Couple, Moran’s YouTube channel with his wife Christina. They cook recipes that connect to Disney history and include material from their recent trip to Tokyo Disneyland.
For Moran’s third appearance on the podcast, we cover a different project. He’s already working on future books, including a close look at the Disney resorts and company history. Based on his previous work, both are definitely exciting prospects. We should enjoy his books well into the future.
