It’s been three weeks since Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker premiered in theaters, and we’ve seen a major split among fans. Many appreciate the return to more familiar ground, while others complain of the safe approach. Rian Johnson broke the mold with The Last Jedi, and certain moments here feel like a response to fan criticism. The situation is hardly that simple, however. With that framework in mind, I’m ready to take a deep dive into the latest Star Wars film.
To assist me in this bold venture, I’m joined by author Brian Jay Jones for this episode of The Tomorrow Society Podcast. Brian is the author of George Lucas: A Life and a lifelong fan of Star Wars. He’s the perfect guest to discuss everything that happens in The Rise of Skywalker. This spoiler-filled episode includes a look at everything that’s happening with Rey and her friends, the conflicted Kylo Ren, and a familiar enemy with Palpatine. We also cover the absence of Kelly Marie Tran, the challenge with depicting Princess Leia, and our favorite scenes from the movie.
Brian’s has also written excellent biographies of Jim Henson and Washington Irving. His latest book, Becoming Dr. Seuss: Theodor Geisel and the Making of an American Imagination, was released in May. During this episode, Brian talks about his experiences writing this book and what surprised him about the life of the famous author. You should definitely add this title to your reading list for 2020. It was great to catch up with Brian, learn more about the book, and dive into The Rise of Skywalker.
