One of my favorite urban legends about Walt Disney is the myth that he was cryogenically frozen. It’s fun because it paints a picture of a grumpy old man waking up to find that his parks are quite different today. The Further Adventures of Walt’s Frozen Head uses the legend as the premise for a fiction film.

Walt’s head spends its days trapped in the basement under the parks, and he finally gets the chance to see Walt Disney World. It’s a cool idea for a movie and the subject of this week’s Tomorrow Society Podcast. I spoke with Writer/Director Ben Lancaster about the project. Lancaster and I discussed the challenges of shooting covertly at Walt Disney World. The idea of a story that partially takes place at The Magic Kingdom is very exciting for a Disney fan.

Ben also talked about his background with Disney’s theme parks and what interested him about directing this movie. There had to be more than silliness with gags about Walt’s head, and the teaser looks reminiscent of Disney’s classic live-action films. The film is currently in post-production and will be completed in late 2016. I’ll definitely be keeping tabs on its status as the release date gets closer.

The shot of Mickey smiling and posing for a picture, unknowingly holding Walt’s head, was genuinely creepy!

It’s definitely a little creepy, though I think it will be silly more than anything else. I’m looking forward to seeing it!
