Many Walt Disney World fans look back fondly at the early days of the resort in the ‘70s and ‘80s. Many attractions from that era are long gone, yet we still think about them regularly. It’s easy to look upon that enthusiasm as just nostalgia for a past era. Those warm feelings are part of the story but hardly the full picture, however. There’s too much history and interesting stories from those days beyond the specific experiences. We have so many resources now to learn about how our favorites were created. That knowledge just expands our interest in Disney World’s past.
One of the best resources for learning about that time is the Retro Disney World Podcast. The monthly show delves into both well-known attractions and some hidden gems from the resort. Hosts Todd McCartney, Brian Miles, How Bowers, and JT Kuzior provide a lot more than the expected information. Topics so far have included attractions like World of Motion, Mission to Mars, and Dreamflight plus the Lake Buena Vista Shopping Village, Christmas, and even retro food.
How Bowers is my guest on the latest episode of The Tomorrow Society Podcast to discuss the podcast and a lot more. We talk about what attracted him to Disney World as a kid in the ‘70s and well into adulthood. As a Florida resident, How visited regularly and has seen each era for the resort. Our fun conversation also covers these topics:
- How did the Retro Disney World Podcast originally come together?
- Where are they able to uncover so much research and archival films?
- What was it like to host a special event at The Living Seas with Bob Gurr?
- Why are Disney fans becoming more interested in extinct attractions today?
- What crazy adventures did How take in the parks with Hoot Gibson?
