It’s hard to predict when Disneyland will connect with you. Some of us became fans early on as kids, while others got the bug as adults. Matt Mason visited the park when he was young but wasn’t a diehard fan. More recently, he found himself becoming obsessed with Disneyland. Many of us can relate to diving into books, podcasts, and more about Walt’s original park. This process ultimately led Matt to write the poetry collection At the Corner of Fantasy and Main: Disneyland, Midlife, and Churros.
Matt is my guest on this episode of the Tomorrow Society Podcast to talk about his book and what inspired him about Disneyland. As the Nebraska State Poet, he’s written about a variety of other subjects in the past. His latest interest took him by surprise and differed a lot from his previous work. Matt describes his creative process, including a cool two-week stay at Disneyland. This approach helped to build a real sense of place within the poems in this book.
We conclude by talking about some fun Disneyland topics, including his favorite attractions in the park. I also grill Matt on important questions like what classic snack he’d enjoy if churros weren’t available. I highly recommend At the Corner of Fantasy and Main, which really captures the spirit of the original Disney theme park. It was great to talk with Matt and learn about what went into the poems in this book.
