So much has been written about Disney’s animated films and the life of Walt Disney, and it’s easy to think we know the whole story. There are always new avenues to explore, but the main components are known. That makes it surprising when an author uncovers a part of Disney history that few have discussed. A perfect example is The Queens of Animation: The Untold Story of the World of Disney and Made Cinematic History. In this remarkable book, Nathalia Holt tells the stories of largely unheralded women that played a key role in Disney’s success.

Author Nathalia Holt joins the Tomorrow Society Podcast to talk about her book The Queens of Animation.

Nathalia is my guest on the latest episode of The Tomorrow Society Podcast to talk about her latest book. She explains what interested her about the project and why its stories are so important. It surprised me to learn how much the female animators shaped Disney’s classic films like Cinderella, Fantasia, and Bambi. Nathalia also presents a well-rounded portrait of Walt as a man of his time yet also a proponent of women at the studio.

I really enjoyed learning more about Bianca Majolie, Mary Blair, Retta Scott, Sylvia Holland, and other talented artists from Disney’s past. Nathalia describes about how Disney changed over time, including the Disney Renaissance and recent years. We also cover her background as a writer and the Rise of the Rocket Girls. That book does a great job presenting untold stories of talented women, this time in the space program.
