Sam Gennawey is one of the premier authors covering the world of theme parks. His books explore both Disney and Universal history in greater detail than most titles. Sam’s urban planning expertise gave him a unique perspective to cover Walt’s plans for the city of EPCOT in Walt and the Promise of Progress City. He followed it with an autobiography of Disneyland that is one of the definitive histories of the park.
Sam’s most recent book is Universal versus Disney: The Unofficial Guide to American Theme Park’s Greatest Rivalry. Beyond the conflict, it provides an intriguing background into Universal’s growth. Gennawey’s books include a large amount of research but never drag; he’s an engaging storyteller. His fandom for the theme park world is key in making the books so compelling.
It was a real treat to get the chance to speak with Sam for this episode of The Tomorrow Society Podcast. Our conversation delved into Universal’s growth and how they’re pushing Disney to stay active with top-notch attractions. We also covered how Disneyland succeeded through urban planning and how some recent changes don’t match that level.
Sam also discussed what drove him into writing about theme parks and revealed an upcoming project. If you’re a fan of Disney, Universal, or anything related to them, you need to pick up copies of Sam’s engaging books.
