I’m continuing to discover remarkable musicians while I explore the background music played at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge. It remains my favorite Walt Disney World resort, and the music is a big reason. The songs that play in the background at the Jambo House lobby and throughout the resort create a relaxing atmosphere. A strong example is the work of George Telek, who hails from the island of Papua New Guinea.
Commonly known as Telek, he sings in his native languages of Kuanua and Tok Pisin. Telek lives in the village of Raluana and has toured the world. His three-part harmonies are typical of the Tolai, who are the indigenous people of the Gazelle Peninsula. These vocals stand out from Telek’s music and create a heart-warming sense of place. His voice echoes strongly through the halls of the Animal Kingdom Lodge.
Telek’s songs at Walt Disney World come from his second studio album Serious Tam, originally released in 2000. The tracks “Balamaris”, “Go Ralom”, and “Talaigu” are part of the resort’s background music. All three songs are excellent and match the overall mood of the entire album. The CD is out of print today, but it’s still available in the MP3 version and on streaming services. I’d highly recommend the full album beyond just the songs played at the Animal Kingdom Lodge.
The Music of Tolai Life
It’s easy to look at the Animal Kingdom Lodge as solely an African resort. Telek’s music reminds us there’s more to the resort than just a savanna. Serious Tam brings an island feel that has more in common with music at Aulani than Samite’s music. These songs are acoustic and present a laid-back atmosphere with a pop tinge. The sweet harmonies on “To Pol” exemplify this approach and convey that sunny vibe. The nature sounds in “Tolili” also fit perfectly with the calming environment at the resort.
Focusing on songs played at the Animal Kingdom Lodge, “Balamaris” is a sweet guitar tune with great harmonies. The slow melody seems perfect for a relaxing morning at Jambo House. “Go Ralom” is driven by a steady drum beat that helps to get the day rolling. This is my favorite of the three songs. “Talaigu” is more on an atmospheric song and fits well in the background. It’s a quick song that’s just over two minutes but creates the right tone.
I watched some Telek performances on YouTube, and his straightforward delivery stands out there. Standing calmly with a guitar next to one fellow musician, his quiet confidence fits perfectly with the material. In particular, Telek’s performance of “Balamaris” at the Coke Studio is a gem. I’m glad to have learned about his music from my Animal Kingdom Lodge visits.
It’s been more than a year since I’ve visited a theme park. Going beyond attraction music and background loops, this series represents another way to connect to Walt Disney World. If you’re a fan of the Animal Kingdom Lodge or just its atmosphere, check out artists like Telek. It’s a great way to connect to a favorite place and enjoy amazing music in the process.
