There’s so much happening right now in the world of theme parks. We just keep learning more about new attractions opening in the next few years and beyond. I can’t think of a better guest to have back than former Disney Imagineer Don Carson. He first appeared on this podcast in January 2020 on Episode 91, and I’ve always enjoyed talking with Don about the world of themed entertainment. This episode is a bit different from the typical interview. Instead of diving into his background, we’re just chatting about a wide range of topics. We still have plenty to cover on Don’s seventh appearance on the Tomorrow Society Podcast.
We begin by discussing Don’s project to recreate the 1955 version of Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride virtually, and it follows a similar approach to the 1958 Alice in Wonderland six years ago. After that, Don and I dive into what interests him today. We cover the massive expansions coming to Walt Disney World, Universal’s Epic Universe, and the overall theme park landscape. Don also gives his thoughts on why the Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser didn’t last in Florida. His history with Renaissance fairs offers an interesting perspective on interactive attractions.
Don remains an early adopter of new technology, including the evolution of virtual reality. His work as a Senior Art Director for Mighty Coconut on the Walkabout Mini Golf VR game has given him an up-close view of what’s possible. We chat about how the use of screens has changed on theme park attractions and become more sophisticated. Don also gives his view on AI from an artist’s perspective who’s worked with new technology for decades. I had a great time talking with Don once again and hope you enjoy this episode.
